World War II; Part 4; Day 3

Posted: December 11, 2008 in World War II

Today, we saw a video of the battle of Guadalcanal. The U.S. Marines made a plan to capture a landing strip in construction for the Japanese. They called it “Operation Shoestring.” At Guadalcanal, they had quickly taken over the airstrip and completed it. They renamed it Henderson Field after a captain that died in battle at Midway Island. After learning what happened, the Japanese sent wave after wave of warships and troops. The Americans weren’t giving up without a fight. Soon, after a few weeks, reinforcements and supplies came in airplanes and ships. Eventually, the island was overrun in rotten vegetables and decaying corpses and the camps and jungle roads have turned into swamps and rows of mud. The conditions were horrible, but we never gave up.
